Sailing Conversion Kits
 |
You can easily add a sail to your existing canoe. All you
need is a sailing rig, which includes the sail and spars, a leeboard
to help sail upwind, and a rudder or paddle to help steer. You
can either add a mast thwart and step to support the mast, or
use our removeable Rigging Deck.
|

Rigging Deck
Intended for open canoes, our famous Rigging Deck allows a mast
to be stepped and a leeboard hung without any modifications to
your boat. They are quite safe to use, having been tested in
winds of Force 5 or 6 -- gale conditions for a canoe. Light-weight
and as attractive as they are functional, they can be easily
removed to return your canoe to a purely paddling craft.

Canoe Rudders
While you can easily steer a sailing canoe with a paddle, most
canoe sailors find it easier still to steer with a rudder. Most
of our canoes are designed to use rudders, and these rudders
can also be used on regular canoes. We have 2 models: a high-aspect
Performance Rudder, and an elegant Classic Rudder. Both come
with our standard push-pull tiller, and we have optional steering
pedals and conventional tillers as well. Rudders typically require
installation of gudgeons on your canoe stem, but watch for the
new Lost in the Woods Clamp-on Rudder coming soon!

Flotation
Any small craft brings with it the risk of capsize, and canoes
are no exception. Capsizes can happen and self-rescue techniques
are an important skill to learn. With a little practice, recovering
from a capsize is easy and routine, but adequate buoyancy is
essential. Our decked canoes include water-tight compartments
in the bow and stern to provide positive flotation. In open canoes,
it is a wise idea to install flotation bags. We carry a range
of heavy duty PVC Buoyancy Bags for this purpose.
